Studio Photography…or location photography?
If you take a look through our site, you will mostly see photography taken outside or on location but in actual fact, we also do a lot of studio photography for agencies who work with brands like Lakeland or RNLI but we are not allowed to show the photos we have taken which means not being able to host and shows galleries. This also means that the photos we show you in this blog won’t be in abundance …but we will try and show some! ;)
We do believe that showing a product in the context and with the people it was made for powerfully captures attention. The location could be outside or in a real-life house or venue - wherever it is, people put themselves in the picture, enjoying or using the place or product. A photo can evoke emotion, affiliation or attachment and a lifestyle shown can be the draw, the attraction and the seller. However, there is an important place for studio photography.
Why studio photography?
A company like Trotters Children’s Wear does it well. Their logo, ‘Making Childhood Memories’ is promoted and elevated in their photos. We create stories with them and use places like woodland, locations houses or streets where the clothes they sell are seen in context. But these scenes or childhood moments don’t allow for catalogues of clothing. This is where studio photography can play an important part. A studio setup with precise lighting is ideal for capturing small details, textures, quality and colours. Controlled lighting and backdrops help bring out intricate designs and patterns in clothing. Studio photography ensures consistent results across multiple shots.
Our experience
Over the last 10 years, we have used many actual studios and we have set up studios in different places. Tom is an experienced lighting technician and has worked in production his entire life. He has gained a lot of experience with studio photoshoot lighting in working for companies like Unilever where he has worked as a gaffa on film sets. He has a great understanding of how to create different looks and feels.
Lizzie has experience with styling from working for years in the wedding industry in shooting detail. She also assists Tom on studio shoots in the set up and in the shooting so that Tom can concentrate on the lighting.
Below are images taken for the RNLI seasonal booklet sent out nationwide. Tom shot these in different setups in studio.
What we can do for you…
If you need headshots or the product you want to promote would ideally be shot in a studio, we would love to shoot for you. Although we are huge believers in shooting in context to help people imagine having what you are selling, studio photoshoots are perfect for showing a customer what is available in the form of flat lays and catalogues. It’s also perfect for corporate headshots where all staff need to have the same backdrop and lighting conditions wherever they are. See more of our headshot photography here.
We have a lot of our own equipment and can set up a studio on location too. Tom will often shoot for a business where he shoots lifestyle in offices to show more of the business and behind the scenes and will then do a studio set up for headshot photography to show staff. See more of this here. We are happy to travel and shoot all over the country.
Studio photography's main strength lies in its predictability, precision, and potential for creativity. We are so comfortable to shoot on location and in studio. Do get in touch if we can help you.
